Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work
Reviewer: Jackson Lears, Editor in Chief, Raritan
Date Added: Friday 02 October, 2009
Matt Crawford has written a brave and indispensable book. By making a powerful case for the enduring value of the manual trades, Shop Class as Soulcraft offers a bracing alternative to the techno-babble that passes for conventional wisdom, and points the way to a profoundly necessary reconnection with the material world. No one who cares about the future of human work can afford to ignore this book.

This is a deep exploration of craftsmanship by someone with real, hands-on knowledge. The book is also quirky, surprising, and sometimes quite moving.

Every once in a great while, a book will come along that’s brilliant and true and perfect for its time. Matthew B. Crawford’s Shop Class as Soulcraft is that kind of book, a prophetic and searching examination of what we’ve lost by ceasing to work with our hands-and how we can get it back. During this time of cultural anxiety and reckoning, when the conventional wisdom that has long driven our wealthy, sophisticated culture is foundering amid an economic and spiritual tempest, Crawford’s liberating volume appears like a lifeboat on the horizon.

Tour Master Transition 2 Jacket, Men’s
Reviewer: Dave Adams
Date Added: Thursday 01 October, 2009
I bought the Transition 2 jacket at Whitehorse's Open House this summer, and wore it home to Boston the next day. Hardly a day has passed since that I haven't worn it and it still looks like new. It's comfortable without the liner from about 50 - 90 degrees. We're finally getting to the time of year when I'll need to zip the liner back in. And when it's wet, I simply zip the vents and pull down the double velcro closures, and I'm dry inside. I have been tremendously happy with this jacket.

Roadgear Multi-Season Adaptive Tech Gloves
Reviewer: Eric Myers
Date Added: Tuesday 29 September, 2009
Roadgear Multi-Season gloves are comfortable and well made. These are no-nonsense, practical gloves that offer conservative styling, as opposed to the more garish racing style gloves. Sizing is generous. I border between medium and large, depending on the manufacturer. The Roadgear medium size fits me well. Just roomy enough. No skimping here. Gauntlet easily fits over jacket cuff, even with the heavy liner installed. Fingers are "pre-curled" thus eliminating any bunching of extra material while holding on to the grips. The leather is very supple. That, coupled with the soft armor, make it easy to manipulate things with these gloves. Almost as easy as a light summer glove. Very impressed. In my experience the comfort range of these gloves is between 50-80ºF. The Adaptive Tech lining does indeed provide a cooling effect at higher temperatures. Only slight perspiration at the higher temps, but I was impressed with the comfort. Liner stays in place and will not pull out or invert (Sweet!) Only minimal insulating effect at lower temps. OK at 50ºF for longer outings, but I started to feel the chill below that. Well engineered and very high construction quality, for the most part. Price reflects this so I guess you get what you pay for. I am, however, having an issues with one bit of stitching, but it's not at a seam. More like accent stitching. These are now my favorite pair of transitional gloves. They offer a much wider temperature - comfort range than anything I've worn. Great for New England commuting for late summer into fall. (and spring too, I suppose). Much nicer to have ONE pair of gloves rather than juggling a heavy morning pair and a lighter afternoon pair.

IMC Microphone and Speaker Kit for Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide, Half Hlmt

Recently bought my second half helmet set for my 08 FLHTCU these sets work beautifully in PTT mode with half helmets. A little jitter in the voice @ 70 mph, to be expected as mike vibrates up and down in the wind. Now Harley has a product for about $120.00 that looks exactly like these right down to the USB style connector. I don't know if it's any better I haven't tested it. I say save $50.00 and by this set! I think you'll be glad you did.

Good price, comfortable, waterproof...great buy! They loosen up over time and are quite comfortable. Been through two rain storms(downpours), heat, and with the right socks these are great! My feet stayed bone dry, even when the rest of me didn't! At least part of me was prepared!

Need a light, comfortable, packable, quick drying undergarment? These are the ticket! One ride and I was hooked. I have added a couple of shirts to match and my trips became MUCH more comfortable and longer. I sweat alot in hot weather and these are great for me. Now a permanent part of my gear set. Get some!

3M Scotchlite Stealth Retroreflective Sheeting
Reviewer: mark s. powell
Date Added: Thursday 27 August, 2009
I use a strip of the Stealth Reflective across the top of my shield as a daytime sunshade/ nighttime conspicuity aid. Also added it to my Napoleon Baren mirrors to add a little width to my frontage. I've had a lot of fun adding this stuff to my bike, bags, and helmet. I'd hate to be behind me with highbeams on!
