Stayin’ Safe: The Art and Science of Riding Really Well

Stayin’ Safe: The Art and Science of Riding Really Well

This book is a selection from the many articles he wrote grouped together in logical chapters, although each column stands on its own. I remember many, but it was joy to read them once again. This collection was put together by a co-instructor at his school and clearly reveals Grodsky’s ability to illuminate complex and sometimes highly technical subjects with an entertaining and personal style, spiced with his trademark wry wit and keen observations of human behavior. Many of his columns focus on helping riders develop specific skills (complete with practice exercises), while others deal with the riding environment and riders’ mental processes. I can only say that whatever stage you are in your motorcycling career, this book is a must read and may help you reach old age.

New riders will definitely benefit from the clear explanations of dual sport gear, accessories, and techniques, while experienced riders coming to dual sport from a street riding background will find chapters covering advanced dirt riding skills, GPS navigation, and preparing for multi-day trips. All terms are explained and riding techniques are described in detail.

Interestingly they explain the physics and dynamics of motorcycling in an effort to get you to understand how the machine reacts to rider input, something we do not do in the UK! It has a clear well laid out style throughout, with detailed diagrams and extensive full-color photographs and illustrations. It covers rider attitude, protective riding gear, pre-ride inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting, as well as basic and advanced skills. Counter steering is also covered, as is group riding; in fact it is hard to work out if anything has been left out of the authoritative work!

Like the first, what you get is nearly 300 pages of some of the best biking routes in the USA. These are routes that will challenge your riding skills, but will also give you things to look at along the way and some good lodging and eating houses. The softbound book is ideally suited to taking with you with maps and point-to-point trip outlines for more than 30 different trips US-wide and includes topographic road maps to help you follow the recommended routes and know what kind of terrain you will meet along the way. If you are going riding in the US and not taking the more conventional road trips like Route 66, this is a must-have travel book for those who long to take two wheels to the best of the open roads.

It seems somewhat strange to be reviewing a book that was written in 1937, but once you have read it you know why it still stands the test of time. In a time where adventure motorcycle books are appearing thick and fast it still stands out as probably one of the first and best written. Fulton was a gifted writer and gives a remarkable insight of the perils of early travel and the difficulties encountered by a lone traveler. This soft-bound book is illustrated by his original drawings, photographs, maps, and charts, which help give some idea of the calibre of the man who clearly had an enormous appetite for life who did not stop at dreams as his life after this adventure proved! A really great read

I must say I found it addictive (sic) reading and very informative despite being fully conversant with first aid. I would say that this is a must read and should be high on the reading list for any serious motorcyclist.

For the veteran motorcycle tourer with no place left to go, or the greenhorn without a clue where to start, the American Motorcycle Association Ride Guide to America, Volume 2 offers almost 300 pages of the most exciting places to travel.

Large, color photos give great previews without giving away the whole trip. Important, yet intricate details, such as which lanes to avoid on the Mackinac Bridge and where to watch out for speed traps in Missouri, can make you an expert on a certain tour before you even fire up the bike.

Overall, the Hornet-DS has given me the best of both worlds, and I cannot remember ever having a helmet that was so satisfying to own. The true beauty of this lid id its versatility. The Hornet-DS is quickly becoming the full-face helmet I reach for more often than not.

Crawford reveals the satisfactions of the active craftsman who cultivates his own judgment, rather than being a passive consumer subject to manipulated fantasies of individuality and creativity.

Shop Class as Soulcraft: An Inquiry into the Value of Work

Reviewer: Reihan Salam, associate editor at The Atlantic

Shop Class as Soulcraft is easily the most compelling polemic since The Closing of the American Mind. Crawford offers a stunning indictment of the modern workplace, detailing the many ways it deadens our senses and saps our vitality. And he describes how our educational system has done violence to our true nature as ‘homo faber’. Better still, Crawford points in the direction of a richer, more fulfilling way of life. This is a book that will endure.
