Just Published! STAYIN' SAFE: The Art and Science of Riding Really Well
By Lawrence Grodsky
Center Conway, NH, March, 2008 - Thousands of motorcycle riders have benefited from the sage advice of well-known motojournalist and riding instructor Larry Grodsky. From 1988 until his untimely death in 2006 he shared his observations and knowledge on how to improve motorcycle safety in his "Stayin' Safe" columns in Rider magazine. Now, a collection of the best of those articles has just been published by Whitehorse Press.
Believing that experiencing the thrills of motorcycle riding and riding safely were not mutually exclusive, Larry Grodsky devoted his career to the development of better riding skills. He knew that riders who gained competence in both mental and physical riding skills would be safer riders.
Larry Grodsky had the ability to illuminate complex and sometimes highly technical subjects with an entertaining and personal style, spiced with his trademark wry wit. He was constantly searching for ways to improve the teaching of riding skills and motorcycle safety. His articles often reflect exhaustive research on a particular subject as well as his keen observations of human behavior.
As compiled by Pete Tamblyn-Larry Grodsky's friend and fellow instructor in his Stayin' Safe Motorcycle Training program-the articles are grouped by topic, with sections on street strategies, safety gear, instructor training, and riding techniques such as braking, cornering, and smoothness, as well as personal stories that give a glimpse of Larry Grodsky himself. To add context and dimension to the articles, Pete Tamblyn contacted Larry Grodsky's friends and colleagues to write personal introductions for many of the articles.
While it is packed with information useful to both novice and experienced motorcyclists, this book is not structured as a how-to guide to motorcycle proficiency. Rather, it is a collection of thoughtful essays to be read and savored individually. Readers will be rewarded by the beautifully written stories of a great motorcycle riding instructor who has left his mark on a generation of grateful riders.
