Just Published! 25 YEARS OF BUELL

By Court Canfield and Dave Gess

Center Conway, NH, July 2008 - The year 2008 marks the 25th year that Buell motorcycles have been made. To commemorate this event Whitehorse Press has published a history of those 25 years written by two Buell enthusiasts and former employees. As Buell celebrates and looks forward, authors Court Canfield and Dave Gess have looked back to gather stories and photographs from the first 25 years that describe the origin and growth of the company, the evolution of the motorcycles, and the people who made them.

Erik Buell is, of course, at the center of this inspiring story, for it was his passion and ideas that started the endeavor. But it was also his ability to inspire those around him to share his dedication to engineering excellence that fueled the development of the company and its success.

This is also the story of one man's perseverance in the face of the seemingly insurmountable problems that so often bring down fledgling companies. When the survival of the business was hanging by a thread and the corporate finances consisted of Erik's thin wallet, he did not give up. With ingenuity and creative use of the resources at hand, the help of loyal employees and colleagues who shared his dedication, and a liberal dose of good luck at key moments, the company was not only able to survive but to flourish.

True to Erik Buell's guiding values, Buell motorcycles reflect the application of sound engineering and careful consideration of the rider's needs, and at the same time possess the beauty and elegance of pieces of fine art. Since the 1980s both authors have been dedicated proponents of Buell both off and on the payroll. Since Court Canfield bought his first Buell motorcycle, he has ridden Buells in 44 states and continues to be an enthusiastic Buell ambassador and the "acknowledged unofficial Buell storyteller." Dave Gess met Erik Buell in 1983 and helped the fledgling Buell Motor Company by generating publicity and promotional materials. A photographer by profession, Gess not only took publicity pictures but also documented the design and building of all the early Buells. These early photographs and stories of Buell provide an insider's view of the company.
