About Firstgear Basegear

Riding to the best of your ability requires gear that not only protects you from the outside elements, but also functions internally to keep you dry and maintain a comfortable body temperature. To accomplish this Firstgear’s Technical Performance Gear (TPG) employs an integrated layering system where each layer performs a specific function. TPG’s three-part system consists of a Basegear to keep you dry, a Tech Liner to maintain a comfortable body temperature, and a selection of jackets and pants designed to allow the two inner layers to operate properly by protecting against outside forces. TPG is the first system designed to function as a cohesive three-part system.

A totally waterproof and breathable 3/4 length jacket that looks as good as it performs. Built with a 600 denier nylon outer shell, the Rainier has a number of important features such as Kevlar reinforced Teramid underlay at the shoulders and elbows and a removable, fully-sleeved liner which can function as a stand-alone jacket.

For warm weather the jacket features a Max-Flow vent system; 10" intake vents on front, 12" exhaust vents on rear and uses an internal, locking, pull cord and external zipper to customize air flow.

In case the bad happens you’re protected with KNOX CE-approved shoulder and elbow armor.

The Rainier has plenty of pockets as you’ll find 2 top front, dry pockets with YKK waterproof zippers; left also has a cell phone pocket, right includes a secondary zippered slash pocket along with 2 lower front, dry pockets with YKK waterproof zippers that also include hidden handwarmer pockets.

If that is not enough, try an upper right arm pocket, a lower left arm key pocket and a hidden rear pouch.

One of the favorite features that Shira loved in her review was the internal, under-helmet, rain hood, which came in most excellently just north of Antarctica.

Of course nighttime visibility is helped with reflective trim on front and rear. This is one serious jacket.

The TPG system works superbly to protect the rider in colder weather too. The windproof Tech Liner did a remarkable job of keeping us warm on 50 degree days and when used in conjunction with a heated vest, kept us comfortable when the thermometer dropped into the 30s.

...The fit and finish is at least equal, if not superior, to anything else on the market. If water resistance, abundant features and price are most important to you, then the Firstgear Jacket and Escape Pants will not disappoint.

I’ll start out by saying, I am a Whitehorse Gear product tester/employee. That being said, I spent 9 very full days wearing the new Firstgear TPG Rainier jacket. I left home on my trusty V-Strom headed for Labrador City, Newfoundland, wearing the TPG Rainier jacket and matching TPG Escape riding pants. (I packed very few other clothes.) Nine days and nearly 2,000 miles later, I arrived back home a bit dusty and tired but extremely pleased with the new Rainier jacket.

The armor is top-shelf Knox Armor yet it’s very comfortable and you barely notice it. The jacket was comfortable in a very wide range of conditions from the high 80s F and dry, down to downright chilly and raining sideways. And features? Holy guacamole does it have some cool features! There are (at last count) 13 dry pockets and 17 waterproof zippers. I thought my tankbag would be too full on this trip, but after stashing a lot of things in the pockets, I had plenty of tankbag space. I also love the cool high speed cord locks to open the vents. It’s brilliant. As are the large silver reflective panels.

Bottom line, this is the best all-weather jacket I’ve ever worn in over 30 years of riding street bikes and in 6 years of product testing. It’s not cheap but I fully expect to get 10 years of service from it. (Firstgear thinks I will too.) If you look at it that way, it’s actually a heck of a deal!
