Dick Mann has been a trendsetter, a groundbreaker, and a mentor for countless motorcycle racers. This is his story, told expertly by Ed Youngblood, acclaimed motorcycle historian.
Driven by self-determination and his own high standards, Dick Mann has worked to improve everything in motorcycling, from frames to racing rules to the political structure of organizations.
Even though Mann has survived terrible race track injuries, the collapse of famous motorcycle brands, and life-threatening illness he remains active today as one of the most influential and respected men in motorcycling throughout the world.
You’ll love reading about Dick Mann’s impressive racing accomplishments: How he garnered Top Ten wins in Grand National Championship for 16 years, was the first man ever to win every category of AMA Grand National competition, and twice made AMA Grand National Champion. The accounts of how he won the Daytona 200 twice are especially good reads as well.
His racing accomplishments are just the beginning. He really begins to shine as a representative elected by his peers, pioneering race track safety and influencing major political changes within the AMA. Youngblood has done an exhaustive research to tell the remarkable and inspiring story of Dick Mann.

I count the moments that I’ve been able to spend in the presence of Dick Mann among the greatest experiences in my lifetime as a motorcycle enthusiast. Heck, my high school football number was even 64! So I never hesitate to unashamedly pimp Mann’s autobiography, Mann of His Time by Ed Youngblood, which is my all-time favorite motorcycle read. If you haven’t read this indepth look at a man who is truly one of the cornerstones of our sport, then you are missing out. This guy has done it all, ranking him in the company of other immortals such as Kenny Roberts and Malcolm Smith, and Youngblood’s book captures it all in brilliant narrative and period-era photos. If you’re like me, you’ll find yourself returning to read this one about once or twice a year, making Mann of His Time a timeless gift.

Through it all, the reader comes to know Mann, not only from his own achievements but also from the perspective of his peers, thanks to Youngblood, whose exhaustive research and interviews of Mann’s numerous contemporaries is worthy of some sort of award in itself. Even Mann was impressed with the depth of Youngblood’s fact-checking.
The reward for fans of motorcycle history is Mann of His Time, a true story, larger-than-life saga that ought to be required reading for any self-respecting hard-core motorcyclist.

Youngblood gives a juicy account of the explosion of motocross with riders, and the AMA’s reluctance to accommodate it. . . . The author has unsurpassed access to AMA archives and this level of thoroughness and detail fills every chapter. . . . an exciting account of the best motorcycle racer in any form that we have seen in America.
